Bad News and Crazy Ideas

My wife was laid off from her job yesterday. She's looking for a new one, and for freelance work. She's been a catalog and website copywriter, and a buyer, for the past eight years; she also has office manager/admin experience, and can write pretty much any kind of copy. If anybody knows of good paying gigs, drop me a note. Ideally in the SF Bay Area, for go-into-an-office jobs, though we'd be willing to entertain suitably juicy options farther afield. We have enough savings to get us through a couple of months, but if something doesn't turn up by then, things will get extremely difficult.

Many people have suggested I do a direct-appeal-to-the-people sort of thing. I'm considering it. I've been toying with the idea of writing a Marla Mason prequel novella/short novel, about her early days as a sorcerer. Would any of you be interested in a donation-driven serial approach, with me posting a chapter a week free online, and soliciting whatever people want to pay? And possibly selling a hard copy/e-book through Lulu.com or something when it's done?

Keeping a roof over our heads is priority #1. Keeping up with our 19-month-old son's medical bills is priority #2, since he has an ongoing chronic medical condition that requires examinations under anesthesia by a specialist, and occasionally surgery, at least a couple of times a year. Not to mention the constellation of pre- and post-operation visits. So I'm exploring my financial options. Comment or e-mail to let me know if you'd be willing to contribute to such a thing. If there seems to be interest, it could be a good option for me -- I've been eager to write this story, anyway. It would be weird and heartbreaking and full of punching.

Very sorry to hear about your current sitch. I first discovered Marla via free giveaway of Blood Engines on the Kindle. I immediately tore through the other books and am eagerly awaiting the next installment. I've been having a rough time myself lately, and those books helped keep my world from growing too dim. Anything I can do to help you out, I'm glad to.

As long as you accept paypal I would be willing as I just read the first book, Blood Engine, and am now working on the sequel, Poison Sleep, and I find Marla fascinating. Want to know more of her past. Or future! Also, if and when you do this, would it be alright to post about it on various livejournal communities, myspace, facebook, twitter, ect? Figure the more the merrier, right?

Sympathy on the job part. My husband had something similar happen last month and just got accepted for a new job. We survived, but I hate hearing it happen to anyone else.

Me too, just read the first book. On the basis of that, I bought the rest from Barnes & Noble! I hope it helps! I noticed it because Borders was featuring it. Are there new covers or new editions or something like that?

No, same old covers, but I'm glad they're giving it attention there!

*vigorous head-nodding yes* I, for one, would be pleased to support anything involving more Marla Mason. Is it okay to Tweet this? I would love to help spread interest.

Tweets would be most welcome! I've pretty much decided to do it. Should have a website and info up online tomorrow, and if you can check back here and spread the word then, that'd be great.

I'm sorry to hear about your wife's ex-job. I'm job-searching myself - have you perused craigslist and your county's human resources page yet?

Anyways, I think ANYTHING having to do with Marla is fabulous. If you do go for it, $20 of my next paycheck (whenever it comes) is earmarked.

"weird and heartbreaking and full of punching" sounds like an excellent mix to me! :-D I know you already wrote you've pretty much decided to do it, but just in case you need another note to push you over the edge into the "definitely doing it" column....

I'd be happy to donate/buy anything to do with Marla. I adore her. I've been a fan/lurker on your various journals for a long time, and would be happy to do anything I could to help.

I'm sorry to hear of your current financial situation & of your son's ill health.
I would definitely love to hear more about Marla - absolutely fantastic books - I've loved reading them & would happily pay to read more!!
I'm shocked you haven't got a film deal to be honest... that's where the big money is.
Would make an excellent film, or even TV series!
Best of luck with it all & hope everything turns out well for you.

I do have a film deal, but the option money is long gone (we used it to buy a car before the baby was born), and Hollywood's in lousy financial shape, too, so I don't expect the production company to make a deal with a studio (which would trigger an avalanche of money, it's true) any time soon.

As for advice, "get a film deal" is right up there with "win the lottery" -- nice if it happens, but tricky to arrange! :)

Glad you like the books!

Tricky to set up, but fun to imagine.

Let's face it: magical items in other fiction are often so much less personalized to their users: magic swords, wands. Time traveling tools. Yawn. So much deus ex machina, or window-dressing. So little aid in understanding characters. When I read the first Marla book, I threw my head back and laughed. Nothing so immediately telegraphed the practicality of the sorceress Marla like her enchanted kicking-in-doors boots. It's much more direct and effective in establishing character than my own activity in that direction, which has largely turned on setting up curiosity why fantasy characters didn't use seemingly powerful tools at their apparent disposal.

When I think about films like the Resident Evil series I boggle that tales with a real plot get the screw. Of course, I can say the same thing about other mediums. Marla offers plot with all the mayhem one might want. If mayhem is the order of the day, the scriptwriter need only show those boots a few times in a fight .... door-shattering boots to the kneecap? groin? But the characters have so much going on, and Marla is not beyond being fooled, and the reader/viewer with her -- it's great stuff, the whole lot.

I have some more Pratt to buy, and I'll get right on it. You know, to advance the cause. My addictions are not a part of this at all, no ...

My post favoring your short fiction has already garnered a positive response (http://jadedconsumer.blogspot.com/2009/07/pratts-hart-boot-excellent-volume-of.html?showComment=1253637497060#c3629973066733888907), so I'm now getting sales to strangers and not just my circle of fiction addicts :-)

I would definitely buy any Marla books (in hardcopy) from lulu - either the prequel, or if you keep writing them.
